Call for boiler scrappage scheme

The Scottish government is coming under pressure to commit funds to upgrading old central heating boilers, similar to the scheme announced for England.

Replacing old boilers could help cut carbon emissions
The boiler "scrappage" scheme was announced by Chancellor Alistair Darling in his pre-Budget report.
The Federation of Small Businesses in Scotland said extending the scheme to Scotland would boost the economy and help cut pollution.
Scottish Labour said Scotland was being frozen out of the scheme.
The chancellor announced grants in England and Wales of up to £400 for 125,000 households to replace old boilers with modern energy-efficient models.
'Greener boiler'
In Scotland, that meant £2m was added to Holyrood's block grant next year, for distribution through its budget.
The Scottish government is facing demands from the FSB, green campaigners and Labour to apply the money to boiler replacement.
Andy Willox, Scottish policy convener for the Federation of Small Businesses, said: "The 'greener boiler' incentive is good news for the environment and the householder but it also has the scope to provide work for local businesses, whether as prime or subcontractors."
A Scottish government spokesman said: "It is for Scottish ministers to determine how to use the consequentials available to them from the pre-Budget report, and we will make further announcements in due course.
"We are currently consulting on an energy-efficiency action plan for Scotland, and welcome views on any Scottish energy-saving scheme, including potential incentives to replace inefficient boilers."

No pushover in tonight's season opener for Boilers

BY MICHAEL OSIPOFF, (219) 648-3137 OR MOSIPOFF@POST-TRIB.COM, BLOGS.POST-TRIB.COM/OSIPOFF
The curtain raises on Purdue's season of great expectations.
The No. 7 Boilermakers take on Cal State Northridge tonight at Mackey Arena as both teams play their first game.
Cal State Northridge last season made the NCAA Tournament -- the program's second trip -- overcoming a series of unfortunate events, before losing to Memphis 81-70 as a No. 15 seed to finish 17-14. The Matadors, who have won back-to-back Big West regular-season titles, were picked third in this preseason's conference poll, after losing five of their top six scorers. They do bring back three players who started, with Willie Galick the top returning scorer at 9.3 points per game. Three junior college transfers in Lenny Daniel, Kevin Menner and Rashaun McLemore were expected to start tonight against Purdue.
"I think they're very athletic," said Purdue coach Matt Painter, who is 4-0 in season openers with the Boilermakers.
"They're going to get into you, pressure you, get after you on the wings."
Painter also said the Matadors play some zone defense, though they didn't show it much in their two exhibition games, crash the boards and use 12 players.
Northridge went 2-0 in its preseason games, as did the Boilermakers. They got a taste of zone against California of Pennsylvania, and faced some physical play against Kentucky Wesleyan, aiding their preparation for the regular season.
"Coach Painter did a good job bringing in two quality teams that play two different styles," said junior forward Rob Hummel, who averaged a team-high 11.5 points in the two exhibitions.
Sophomore guard Lewis Jackson tonight will serve the final game of his three-game suspension, and freshman forward Sandi Marcius continues to be sidelined -- likely until at least December -- with a broken bone in his right foot. Painter on Wednesday said freshman guard Kelsey Barlow will not redshirt this season.
In July before last season, Northridge coach Bobby Braswell was in a serious car crash, missing close to a month of work. In January, the Matadors' leading scorer and the coach's son were arrested in connection with an alleged burglary and dismissed from the team. Then in February, their point guard was nearly killed in a car crash.

Boilers seek proof at Michigan

WEST LAFAYETTE – Sometimes humiliation is a great motivator. Just ask Purdue linebacker Chris Carlino and the rest of the Boiler defense.

Nobody has forgotten the way Wisconsin steamrolled that defense with 266 rushing yards six days ago. Now Purdue heads to Michigan on Saturday and redemption is a top priority.

“We all feel we have something to prove,” Carlino said. “Getting beat like that gives you a sense that you have to re-establish yourself.”

The Boilers (3-6) have no margin for error, in part because they have to win their final three games to become bowl eligible, in part because they haven’t won at Michigan (5-4) since 1966.

At least they face a struggling Wolverine team. Michigan has lost four of its last five games after a 4-0 start. In the last two weeks it lost at Penn State 35-10 and at Illinois 38-13. The Illini had been winless in the Big Ten.

Still, coach Danny Hope doesn’t see the Wolverines as being vulnerable.

“They strike fast on offense and they’re quick on defense,” Hope said. “They have a lot of talented players. They’ve had some mishaps in games that have cost them. They’ve had some turnovers and unfortunate events. They weren’t that far off in some of the games they’ve lost. They have great players and make some great plays. Lots of them.”

Michigan wins with offense. It leads the Big Ten in scoring (31.6 points) and rushing offense (207.6 yards). It is seventh in the conference in scoring defense, allowing 25.1 points.

“Michigan’s offense does a great job of keeping them in the game,” quarterback Joey Elliott said, “so our defense will have to step up.”

The Wolverines are not a power-running team like Wisconsin. They utilize a spread attack that has enabled six players to rush for at least 181 yards. Tailback Carlos Brown leads with 465 yards.

“They’re fast and good,” Hope said. “They spread you out and get the ball to (their playmakers) in a hurry. It happens fast so you’d better get there in a hurry or they’ll be gone.”

Michigan plays two quarterbacks and both can run. Denard Robinson is the better runner. He’s rushed for 287 yards and five touchdowns while averaging 5.4 yards a carry. Tate Forcier has rushed for 214 yards and averages 2.5 yards a carry.

Forcier is the main passer. He’s 107-for-193 for 1,424 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. Robinson is just 11-for-22 for 179 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.

“I don’t look at either one of them as being that much different,” Hope said. “Maybe they choose to use them differently, but both of those guys can really run and really throw. They’re exceptional athletes. (Robinson) was the fastest guy in the state of Florida last year. He’s really fast. Both of them are top-of-the-line passers and runners. I don’t see defending them differently.”

While the statistics show Michigan’s defensive liabilities (it is also sixth against the pass and eighth against the run), Elliott sees plenty of potential trouble.

“Their linebackers are very good and they have tremendous athletes,” he said. “They have athletes all over the field.”

Turnover margin drags Boilers down

Jaycen Taylor, Aaron Valentin and the other Purdue players who fumbled last week won’t be seen carrying footballs around campus or be cradling them at bedtime.
Coach Danny Hope said there won’t be any gimmicks that will fix Purdue’s turnover issues, especially considering there wasn’t one common cause among the six the team had in a 27-21 loss to Northwestern.
Joey Elliott’s interception came because receiver Keith Smith didn’t run a crisp route, Hope said. Elliott’s fumble was because he couldn’t hold on while he was getting his face mask yanked.
Another fumble came because a player was holding the ball in the wrong arm, another when the ball was held too loosely.
So Hope has specific drills ready this week to work on ball protection.
One way is to capitalize on every minute of practice with punt and kick returners when they may not be in other drills, either by having a machine send balls their way or getting a punter to kick to them.
Valentin, also the team’s No. 2 receiver, has fumbled three punts and kicks the past three weeks.
Hope has a plan for other players, too.
“We’ll have the scout team try to reach in there and pull the ball out some when the ballcarriers are going by them when they’re in play and when they’re coming back to the huddle, try to work on stripping the ball from them some,” Hope said. “(A turnover) manifests itself in a lot of different ways, and so we’ll look at all those different things and try to work on all those different things. You have to go out there and practice those situations.”
Hope and his players think turnovers are the reason the team is 1-4, the program’s worst start since 1993. That team also started 1-4 – and finished 1-10.
Purdue is tied for 113th out of 120 Division I teams in turnover margin (minus 8 for season, minus 1.6 per game). Four of the six teams worse than the Boilermakers also have losing records.
“Every game, we’ve had a couple turnovers that have changed the game,” Smith said. “But all in all, we’ve found a way to still be in it at the end of the game. It’s a couple turnovers away of being with a winning record. We’ve got to work on those little things. The little things turn into big things like they have in the last couple games. We’ll go out this week and get ready to go (for Minnesota).”
Part of evening out that dismal margin is limiting mistakes, but Purdue also can improve on it by getting its defense to force more turnovers.
The Boilermakers are eighth in the Big Ten in creating turnovers. They have recovered five fumbles and have four interceptions;only one of those picks is by a defensive back.
“When (the coaches) sat down and talked about the areas we turned the ball in the other day in the game and I said, ‘Anything else?’ The defensive coaches said, ‘Yeah, we need to get some more,’ ” Hope said. “So it’s recognized, and we have the guys to do that. Pressuring the quarterback is a big part of that. It’s the style of offenses you play against.
“We’d like to accrue more takeaways – that’s for sure.”

Oxygen analyser helps keep boilers burning cleanly

Users of small industrial boilers need no longer be faced with the economic constraints of applying continuous online oxygen monitoring techniques for optimising energy efficiency.
Users of small industrial boilers need no longer be faced with the economic constraints of applying continuous online oxygen monitoring techniques for optimising energy efficiency, following the launch of ABB's AnalyzeIT AZ100 Zirconia oxygen analyser system.
Aimed primarily at the OEM market for boilers up to 5MW where oxygen monitoring is particularly price-critical, the new ABB analyser system provides an easy-to-use, highly cost-effective solution to maximum combustion efficiency and minimum oxygen flue emissions.
Previously, cost considerations have limited small boiler operators to using portable devices for oxygen checking on a regular basis.
Now, the price of the new ABB AZ100 system with its integral ABB 4600-based electronics platform brings economic viability to time-saving continuous online analysis.
The newly designed Zirconia oxygen probe is a key cost-saving feature.
Unlike ABB's high-end in-situ devices, it is a "limpet" type which sits on the outside of flue duct.
Flue gas samples are drawn up through a tube within the duct and directed to where the sensor is mounted.
A mains powered heater within the probe eliminates the need for expensive transformers and, since reference air is supplied by diffusion of ambient air, there is no need for the usual in-built air pumping facility.
The probe, available in length options of 200, 350, 500 and 650mm, operates in process temperatures from ambient to 600C and up to a maximum external duct wall temperature of 400C.
With a response speed of less than three seconds and a typical sensor life span of at least four to five years, the ABB AZ100 oxygen analyser brings to the small boiler market many of the benefits which have come to be internationally recognised with ABB high-end Zirconia ZFG/ZMT systems.
Protected to NEMA 4X/IP66 for reliable operation in demanding environments, the new AZ100 oxygen analyser employs a dedicated transmitter based on ABB's highly successful 4600 Series for interfacing the probe.
It is user-programmable and has a comprehensive diagnostics facility with in-built software.
High/low alarms and linear or logarithmic isolated retransmission are featured, together with displays which include percentage oxygen, cell temperature, cell millivolts, alarm set points, calibration sequence diagnostics and output settings.
Information displays can be programmed for English, French, German or Spanish languages.
The ABB AnalyzeIT AZ100 Zirconia oxygen analyser meets the requirement for the EN50081-1 general emission standard for residential, commercial and light industry, and the EN50082-2 generic immunity standard for industrial environments.

BHEL and IITM organize 3-day International workshop on CFBC boilers

Tiruchirappalli: The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) and the FBC & HRSG (Fluidised Bed Combustion and Heat Recovery Steam Generators) group of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchirappalli jointly conducted a three day international workshop on 'Fluid Dynamic Scaling, Design and Instrumentation of Cold Models and Practical issues of CFBC Boilers'.

The International workshop was attended by FBC experts from Sweden, Germany, Canada and Australia in addition to professors from IITM, NIT, Tiruchirappalli, BHEL’s Corporate R&D officials and engineering groups from BHEL, Tiruchirappalli.

Explaining BHEL’s involvement in the development of FBC technology, A V Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchirappalli, said that BHEL pioneered the research in Fluidised bed combustion as early as 1975.

He said that the company had built test facilities of Bubbling-bed and Circulating Fluidised-bed, for testing newer fuels and the data was used in the design of commercial units. He also said that BHEL was currently executing many CFBC projects of 125 MWe capcity, firing medium-to-high sulphur lignite of Gujarat and Rajasthan and two projects at Neyveli of 250 MWe capacity CFBC units.

Delivering the keynote address on the inaugural session, Mr. A V Krishnan, said that, as global climatic change programmes being pressed hard, BHEL’s quest had been towards clean energy and clean combustion. Mr STH Rizvi, ED (Coporate Engineering and Product Development-CEPD), BHEL, New Delhi, in his special address, said that BHEL’s responses to climate change were IGCC (Integrated Gasifier Combined Cycle) and supercritical technology.

Pointing out BHEL’s readiness in meeting the country’s power requirement by increasing its manufacturing capacity, Mr Rizvi said that every one per cent increase in GDP of the nation could be achieved with two percent increase in energy requirement.

Mr M Karunakara Reddy, General Manager (FBC& HRSG) welcomed the gathering and briefed about the developmental growth of CFBC technology.

Mr. A V Krishnan urged the experts attending the workshop to deliberate all technical issues connected with CFBC technology and wanted the 'scale-down' studies to optimize the performance of the commercial plant by as closely representing the operating characteristics as possible in the scaled-down model.

More 'green' biomass boilers could be on the way

Bradford Council hopes to build a new storage unit in the city’s Peel Park to house the wood chippings it needs to fuel two biomass boilers.

The boilers were installed at City Hall and Ilkley Town Hall last year as part of the Council’s pledge to reduce its carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2010/11.

Many of the wood chippings used to power the boilers come from timber taken from the authority’s estates and woodlands.

In January last year the Telegraph & Argus reported that the district’s nine civic Christmas trees were turned into chippings to fuel the wood-burning boilers. In addition, trees cut down as part of a restoration of Roberts Park in Saltaire have been turned into woodchips to be used in the boilers.

Now the Council wants to increase its storage facilities to help it save nearly £60,000 a year through the new technology.

The authority is also considering installing similar biomass boilers at other Council buildings in a drive to cut its emissions.

A Council spokesman said: “There is a planning application to increase the size of a shed at Peel Park which stores wood chippings. The wood chippings are used in biomass boilers at Bradford City Hall and Ilkley Town Hall.

“The boilers are fuelled by the woodchips which are collected from Leisure Services. The boiler at City Hall could provide up to £50,000 per year savings and up to £7,000 per year at Ilkley Town Hall.

“The additional storage for wood chippings at Peel Park would give us the opportunity to try the biomass technology at additional locations and other Council buildings.”

The Council also wants to deliver 20 per cent of the power it uses through renewable sources by 2020. Solar power technology is already in place at Bradford Central Library.

The target date for the application to be determined is Tuesday, September 15.

swimming pool covers and condensing boilers save energy

VALE of Glamorgan energy manager David Powell says it’s important that the authority sets a good example to the community by being as energy efficient as possible.

It is committed to improving its environmental credentials, including energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

Working with the Carbon Trust to produce a carbon management reduction strategy, it has secured 50% match funding to create a “spend to save” fund of just under £500,000.

Buildings are being systematically surveyed to identify need for extra insulation and other measures and the fund is replenished through savings made.

Other measures include swimming pool covers, improved heating controls, radiator reflector panels, high efficiency condensing boilers, improved lighting emitters and controls and voltage reduction equipment.

SMART meters were installed to collect information on how much energy is used in each half hour period daily and can highlight if equipment is left on unnecessarily.

Five primary schools took part in the RWE nPower-sponsored climate cops programme and children can now point out to others when energy is being wasted.

A two-year realising resources programme with Groundwork Bridgend Neath Port Talbot involves 25 primary schools and is supported with European funding.

Teachers and pupils learn to read utility meters and track how much energy is being used.

The aim is to reduce consumption by 10% within each school and also looks at water use and waste produced.

Almost all housing stock has been insulated and high efficiency condensing gas boilers are being installed where practical.

The authority is committed to all departments achieving Green Dragon Environmental award level 1 by 2010 – many already have, with one achieving the highest level 5.

Manufacturer celebrates 60 years, introduces water heater, boiler

Since its establishment in 1949, Fulton has sold more than 100,000 boilers. Now it’s looking to add to those totals with the introduction of a direct-contact water heater and its first horizontal firetube boiler for the U.S. market at Clean ’09.
Bruce Beggs, Editor , American Laundry News
Published 06/20/2009 - 12:44 p.m. CT

The water heater operates with more than 98% efficiency, Fulton says, providing customers with the most efficient method of generating hot water. The hot-water generators are offered in three sizes: 1 million Btu/hr, 2.5 million Btu/hr and 5 million Btu/hr.

Each heater is matched with a unique integral storage tank and hot-water transfer pump, fully piped and wired, making it a complete packaged unit.

The new heaters are designed for use in industrial laundries and other industries that require high volumes of hot water.
“Our new direct-contact water heater enables us to support the flexibility of our customers’
businesses,” says Carey Merritt, steam systems product manager. “The high-quality, reliable product features durable construction and efficient operation in a complete project line so that they will meet customer hot-water demands for years to come.”

Fulton has expanded distribution of its horizontal firetube steam and hot-water boilers up to 800 hp to include the United States. The New York company has manufactured the boilers for more than a decade in the global market.

Its horizontal firetube boilers feature a three-pass wet-back design, and are offered with an open protocol burner with a pressure rating of up to 300 psig MAWP. Additionally, Fulton has partnered with Riello Burners and Siemens to create a high-horsepower boiler that is also equipped with state-of-the-art controls.

The 150 hp steam model on display has already been sold to the Royal Sonesta here in the French Quarter.

“They knew we were bringing one to the show, and their old boiler was struggling,” Merritt says. “They came by, looked at it and said, “Ship it.’ It was the right size and the right time — it was kind of a destiny thing.”

Schuylkill seeks coal for new flex boilers

Schuylkill County officials are searching for coal to burn in new flex boilers at the courthouse and prison.

“We’re going to have new coal boilers ... they should be more effective,” Bill Liptok, director of public works, said.

The new boilers can burn gas or coal — a first in Schuylkill County.

“We’ve never had gas, so we don’t know how it will be in the winter,” Liptok said.

Liptok asked the county commissioners at their meeting Wednesday to allow him to advertise for coal bids. The commissioners will vote on it next week.

He acknowledged county officials have had a hard time finding coal vendors over the past several years.

Last year, Liptok said the county used 488 tons of coal in the courthouse and prison combined. He said the coal was provided by Frackville coal dealer Roy Manbeck at $145 per ton.

A contract, Liptok said, will allow county officials to buy “as little as we need, up to 1,000 tons.”

Fewer tons could be used this year thanks to the new boilers, a key part of the county’s $2.6 million energy deal with PPL, approved by the commissioners last September. A savings of about $1 million over 15 years is anticipated.

The idea, Liptok said, will be to use gas heat during mild months and coal heat during the frigid days of winter.

Boiler replacement work has begun, and Liptok said work on underground gas lines will be done over the summer.

“We want all of this in place for the upcoming heating season,” he said.

Liptok added that the county also will seek natural gas providers through the bidding process.

$3 million gain

After the meeting, commissioners Chairwoman Mantura M. Gallagher said the county retirement fund reached $76.6 million in May, its third consecutive month of increases.

The fund, which pays out to more than 400 retired county workers each month, had fallen to $67 million earlier this year due to the economic recession. It had seen highs of more than $90 million last year.

The fund gained just under $3 million in May, rising from $73.9 million at the end of April.

Judge prohibits wood boiler in Henrietta Township dispute

A lengthy dispute between Henrietta Township neighbors was resolved this week, resulting in one family not being allowed to use an outdoor wood boiler.

Circuit Court Judge Chad Schmucker ruled that Richard and Julia Cady cannot use the wood boiler, which he believes was a nuisance and health hazard to neighbors.

The Cadys represented themselves in the civil trial in which they were sued by the Jackson County Health Department.

Wood boilers, increasingly popular in rural areas as energy costs rise, transfer heat through water lines from an outside structure to a home for both space and water heating.

The judge also prohibited Cady from incinerating trash, debris and other materials in backyard burn barrels.

Schmucker said the Cadys did not break any laws and that the boiler was properly installed but produces smoke, which can be a nuisance to neighbors.

Richard Soldano, 53, testified he started having headaches in 2003, before Cady built his home, because Cady frequently burned garbage in barrels on his property.

Since then, he's had chest pain and trouble breathing after being outside when the wood boiler is operating.

Soldano's wife has had a chronic cough, and Soldano said he has asthma and a chronic lung condition. Doctors have attributed the conditions to smoke inhalation and warned against the dangers of breathing smoke.

``We are very pleased. It is what we asked the court to do,'' said Bob Grover, the lawyer for the health department. ``I hope it finally resolves problems between neighbors that have been going on for five to six years. I am not optimistic, but hopeful.''

-- Reporter Danielle Quisenberry contributed to this report.

Busy Weekend on the Diamonds for Boilers

Purdue's baseball and softball teams face a busy weekend on the diamonds this weekend as the baseball team plays for its Big Ten Conference fate and the softball teams takes part in the NCAA regional down in Louisville

The baseball team has already gotten a head start, as the final weekend series of the regular season before conference tournaments move back a day to a Thursday-Friday-Saturday format. Purdue needs two wins, two Michigan losses against Northwestern, or one win and one Michigan loss to advance to the Big Ten Tournament next week in Columbus. The Boilers took the first step yesterday with a convincing 12-5 win in the series opener against Illinois.

This was a very impressive win for the Boilers. Phil Haig is the ace of the Illinois staff and Purdue tagged him for 6 runs and 11 hits in five innings of work. Illinois is in the running for an at-large NCAA Tournament berth because of Haig and what he has done on the season. Haig gave up 1 run over seven innings of work earlier this season at #1 LSU as the Illini took two of three from the Tigers when they were the top ranked team in the country. LSU is one of the best home team in collegiate baseball, so a Big Ten team taking two of three from them is virtually unheard of. Dan Black hit his 14th home run of the season for Purdue yesterday and drove in five runs on three hits. Drew Madia also added an eighth inning grand slam to put things away.

Michigan did not cooperate on its end, beating Northwestern 16-6 to stay alive for another day. Purdue had a chance to clinch this afternoon with a 1pm first pitch against the Illini, but Dan Black struck out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to seal a 6-3 loss. Purdue left the bases loaded in each of the last two innings, so they had plenty of chances to make some noise. They now get one more chance to control their fate tomorrow afternoon with a 1pm first pitch at Lambert Field. Michigan and Northwestern just got underway with game two of their series tonight. Rain could play havoc with both game threes tomorrow. If neither game gets played tomorrow, Purdue would still go to the Big Ten Tournament by a half game. So here is what Purdue needs now:

  • A win over Illinois tomorrow OR
  • A loss by Michigan to Northwestern tonight or tomorrow OR
  • Rainouts of both games tomorrow.

UPDATE: Michigan and Northwestern's Friday night game has been rained out and moved to Saturday.

Softball faces Louisville in NCAA Tournament

The women's softball team makes it second NCAA Tournament appearance tonight at Louisville, facing off against the host Cardinals. Purdue gathered some postseason honors along the way this week. Third baseman Liane Horiuchi, and freshman utility player Molly Garst were named second team all-Big Ten while catcher Jenna Alexander and pitcher Suzie Rzegocki were named to the third all-Big Ten team.

Louisville (47-8) finished ranked 19th in the final poll of the season and very nearly was a national seed. They will be the #2 seed in this four team regional, but will host because of geographic balance in the region. They have already set a record for most wins in a season and will be hosting a regional for the first time. It is the second straight year Purdue is the #3 seed in their regional.

Louisville hits the ball very well. Eight players are batting better than .300 on the season and catcher Melissa Roth is batting .437 with 16 home runs and 51 RBI. Third baseman Chelsea Bemis (.389, 8HR, 43 RBI) and outfielder Kristi Cunningham (.307, 12 HR) also pack quite an offensive punch. Purdue will likely be facing Kristen Wadwell in the pitching circle. Wadwell is an ironhorse with a 40-7 record for the Cardinals. She has 237 strikeouts and a 1.37 ERA for the season. Her 40 wins is the best in the country.

Boilers split with Illini

For two hours Wednesday, Purdue's softball team was happily in the top half of the Big Ten Conference standings.

But with one dreadful inning,

After Suzie Rzegocki held an Illinois team with 34 home runs to just a double and a single in a 4-1 victory, the Illini were propelled by a six-run third inning to capture the nightcap 10-6 and leap back ahead of the Boilermakers into fifth place.

"We really needed to sweep this team," said freshman Molly Garst, who was 3-for-7 with three RBIs and three stolen bases in the doubleheader. "We didn't capitalize at the plate, and we really needed the win (in the second game)."

Jenna Alexander drove in two runs, and Garst drove in another during the Boilermakers' Game 1 victory, but the offense was nonexistent in the second contest until it was too late.

Purdue fell behind 6-0 and trailed 10-3 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of home runs.

Rzegocki, who started both games, didn't allow an earned run in 92/3 of work Wednesday, but earned a victory and a defeat after surrendering four unearned runs in the six-run third.

Dana Alcocer relieved Rzegocki in the third inning and gave up consecutive RBI doubles. Alcocer allowed nine hits and four earned runs in 22/3 innings before Ashley DiDomenico entered in the sixth.

Alcocer hit two batters with the bases loaded.

"We could not shut them down in the circle, we got behind batters, we hit batters, we allowed back-to-back doubles, it just wasn't good in the circle for us," Purdue coach Kim Maher said.

Katie Mitchell finally put Purdue on the board, hitting a solo homer over the right field fence to make the score 6-1.

Garst's two-RBI single in the fifth made 7-3, but the Illini countered with three runs in the top of the sixth.

Purdue got a two-run homer from Liane Horiuchi in the bottom of the seventh for the game's final runs.

Maher said that most of the runs came with the pressure off after the Boilermakers gave up a large lead.

Boilers face Big Ten competitor at Metrodome

The Boilermakers will need to take advantage of this weekend’s series to advance in Big Ten standings.
The Purdue baseball team (17-18, 5-6 Big Ten) enters today’s game fifth in the Big Ten standings. The Boilermaker’s weekend opponent, Minnesota (24-12, 7-4), sits just above them.
After defeating Butler 18-4 Wednesday, the team gained confidence going into the Big Ten series. With the Big Ten tightly stacked this season, coach Doug Schreiber believes his team has a chance to beat anyone in the conference.
“Confidence should be a little bit higher,” Schreiber said. “We just have to play well on Friday. It all comes down to who plays better on that given day.”
However, the Boilermakers will have to get past tough pitching from the Golden Gophers, who hold a conference-best 4.64 team ERA.
The series brings an interesting change in atmosphere for the Boilermakers. The teams will be playing in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, something that will force the Boilermakers to change their game a little.
“It’s going to be different playing in a dome,” Schreiber said. “Especially with the type of ceiling that they have. It might be tough for the guys to get used to it, so that will be the biggest difference. I mean, they have the same field turf inside there that we have, so that won’t be too big of a difference. I think seeing fly balls is going to be tough.”
The Metrodome is also used by the Minnesota football team as well as the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and MLB’s Minnesota Twins. Although the players relish the chance to play in such a prestigious venue, they understand the importance of winning.
“It’s going to be nice to play in a major league park, but we have to take it like any other game,” sophomore David Blount said. “We have to play hard and play our game.”
The Boilermakers will face Minnesota at 7:30 p.m. Friday and at 3 p.m. Saturday. The teams will wrap up the series at 2 p.m. Sunday. All games are in Minneapolis, Minn. Friday’s game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.

The future for gas boilers efficiency

How are manufacturers achieving such high levels of efficiency and will it ever be possible to create a gas boiler that's 100% efficient?.

All new and replacement gas-boiler installations (with limited exceptions) must now run at over 86% efficiency.

Some boiler manufacturers are now only building SEDBUK A-rated models, which are over 90%.

With ongoing dedication to improving the efficiency of new boilers, how are manufacturers achieving such high levels of efficiency and will it ever be possible to create a gas boiler that's 100% efficient?.

Martyn Bridges, Worcester's director of marketing and technical support, sheds some light: "Gas domestic heating became popular here in the seventies when North Sea gas became a viable option for the UK to pump.

Until relatively recently, gas boilers were built in cast iron with a simple ignition system, which was often open flue.

In many instances boilers sat in a fire behind a back boiler.

"Many of these back boilers (regular units) had a permanent pilot light, which means that efficiency was compromised quite significantly.

In fact with a permanent pilot light it isn't possible to reach a SEDBUK band D rating (78 -- 82% efficiency).

In the late nineties these permanent pilot lights were eliminated.

"Energy efficiency has been an increasingly important factor in Government environmental policy for a good number of years.

In 1984, the first energy-efficiency rules were introduced within the Building Regulations.

They were extensively tightened in 2002 with the introduction of the SEDBUK (seasonal efficiency of domestic boilers in the UK) rating system within Part L1.

"Further strengthening then occurred in the 2004 updated regulations and precipitated the market's rapid transference to condensing boilers.

In the spring of 2005, all new and replacement gas-fired boiler installations were required to be condensing boilers of at least 86% efficiency (SEDBUK Band A or B).

"Over the years, the development of boiler technology has seen efficiency levels grow massively and now that Part L of the Building Regulations is now firmly in place for gas-fired appliances, manufacturers are keen to prove their boilers are amongst the most efficient.

"A high efficiency condensing boiler works on the principle of recovering as much as possible of the waste heat which is normally rejected to the atmosphere from the flue of a standard efficiency (non-condensing) boiler.

The best high efficiency condensing boilers convert more than 90% of their fuel into heat, compared to 78% for conventional types.

"This is accomplished by using a larger heat exchanger or sometimes two heat exchangers within the boiler which maximize the heat transfer from the burner as well as recovering useful heat which would normally be lost with the flue gases.

When in condensing mode the flue gases give up their 'latent heat' which is then recovered by the heat exchanger within the boiler.

As a result the temperature of the gases exiting the flue of a condensing boiler is typically 50-60degC compared with 120-180degC in a current non-condensing boiler.

At the same time an amount of water or 'condensate' is produced.

"There has been some talk in recent months of the 100% efficiency boiler, however in actual terms this will never be physically possible using current technology.

The highest achievable efficiency for gas-fired boilers is currently 91.6% and I don't see us being able to go much beyond that in the future.

"The real opportunity in terms of increasing efficiency with home heating and hot water provision is to look at secondary efficiency which can be affected by factors such as electricity consumption, standby losses, advanced controls and power save functions.

"At Worcester we are currently appraising a number of options in terms of extra components which will potentially improve these secondary efficiency levels in our Greenstar boilers.

"Other key factors which will also help a boiler run more efficiently include the correct pipework sizing, siting the boiler in the most suitable location and regularly flushing the system, helping to prevent corrosion and make sure it's free from debris.

"Over time your heating system can become rusted from the inside producing iron oxides (black sludge).

This sludge plays havoc with the working parts of a heating system, blocking pipes, radiators, valves, pumps and heat exchangers.

If left to corrode for too long this can significantly reduce the efficiency and even cause premature failure of any of these components.

"The overall carbon savings can be huge if homeowners take a little time out to think about their central heating system operation and installers have a big part to play in encouraging their customers to do this.

They have the direct contact with end-users and this is the best opportunity to convince them they can make a big difference with their actions.

Not just for the environment either; the financial benefits are significant too.

Research from the Energy Saving Trust (EST) claims that potential savings on heating bills can work out around GBP200 a year by replacing an old standard efficiency boiler with an A rated appliance, and combining that with well suited controls.

"Controls can significantly improve the efficiency of the heating system, but selecting the right unit is paramount.

Weather-compensation, for instance, is widely specified in Europe yet infrequently at present in the UK - even though it improves efficiency by reacting to actual weather conditions rather than flow and return water temperatures.

"Controls also have a vital role to play in adjusting a boilers firing rate (input) to meet the heating demand (output) of the system.

By modulating input correctly, less fuel is burned and wasted and emissions are reduced in the process.

"Recent technological advances mean a wide range of intelligent options are now available for installers to choose from in order to meet the exact requirements of each individual household they visit.

Whether specifying basic controls, like mechanical timers, or opting for more advanced controls with room thermostats, such as radio frequency or weather and load compensation systems, it is important to specify the most compatible product in order to ensure best performance from a high-efficiency boiler.

"Combining a high efficiency condensing boiler with our Greenskies solar water heating package will also improve a home's efficiency with 50 -- 70% of a home's hot water provision being provided for free by the sun.

Not only will this represent a further cost saving on bills, it will further reduce the CO2 emissions from the household as the majority of the time you turn on the hot water during the year the boiler will not need to burn any fuel, the heat will be provided by the solar panels.

"According to the EST if everyone in the UK with gas central heating installed a high efficiency condensing boiler, we would save enough energy to heat 3.7 million homes for a year.

So we don't need 100% efficiency boilers, we just need more people to re-think their current heating system.".

Power gear cos may get separate orders for boilers & turbines

NEW DELHI: The government plans to tweak the tendering process for very large power equipment to allow companies to bid separately for boilers
and turbines, a power ministry official said.
The move to withdraw the earlier policy of seeking turnkey contracts, where the winning bidder hands over the completed project, for the proposed supercritical power plants will enable larger participation from global equipment manufacturers, the official said on condition of anonymity.

Supercritical power plants are very large with a minimum capacity of 660 mw for every unit and are more efficient.

Public sector NTPC and Damodar Valley Corp (DVC) will soon come out with tenders inviting bids for 11 units of 660 mw power equipment for five of their upcoming projects.

A turnkey contract criteria limits the race to select few like BHEL and Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the official said. "Our aim is to invite a larger participation and enhance competition so that the country is able to absorb the best technology," he said.

So far, five companies - BHEL, L&T-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) combine, Alstom-Bharat Forge, Toshiba-JSW and Italian company Ansaldo Caldie - have expressed interest in participating in the bulk tendering for supercritical equipment.

While L&T and BHEL will participate in entire plant package, Alstom and Toshiba want to bid only for turbine-generator package, and Ansaldo only for boilers. "The changes in the tendering process have been approved by a high-level committee on infrastructure on power sector issues," the official said.

The committee has representation from the prime minister's office (PMO), finance ministry, power ministry, heavy industries ministry and Planning Commission, among others.

It has been decided that the tender for boiler package will be split between two bidders and that for the turbine-generator package between three bidders. While the lowest bidder (R1) in the boiler package will get three projects, the second-lowest bidder (R2) will get two projects after matching price quoted by R1. The number of units for each bidder would be either seven and four, or six and five. The turbine-generator package is proposed to be split amongst three bidders, with the last bidder getting only one project.

Public sector BHEL will be given preference in the tendering process and would be necessarily ranked R2, if it is not R1 and R2 already. This would ensure that BHEL does not lose out in the tendering process to get projects for its supercritical foray.

An inter-ministerial group is finalising the details, the official said. The power companies will start the tendering process after that, he added.

The move will also lead to winning bidders setting up manufacturing for large equipment facilities. At present, only BHEL has large-scale power equipment manufacturing capability in the country while L&T is expected to start manufacturing of main power equipment soon. Having more equipment manufacturing companies in the country will ensure the shortage of equipment does not derail capacity-addition programmes, the official said.

Worcester boilers of the highest quality

Leading boiler manufacturer, Worcester, has won the new Bosch Thermotechnology Quality Award for for the Greenstar i Junior, i System and Si boilers.

The accolade was judged by an expert panel against the other 19 manufacturing sites across the international Bosch Thermotechnology Group and Worcester came out the clear winner.

Worcester Greenstar i Junior

Worcester Greenstar i Junior

The prize was won for the Greenstar i Junior, i System and Si boilers which are all high efficiency condensing gas-fired models.

Worcester has recently developed and enhanced these boliers to raise the standard even higher, which contributed towards the win.

New features for Winter 2008 include the ability to pre-plumb the condensate pipework to the wall mounting jig and a universal fitting for the condensate trap, which is capable of accommodating various different pipe manufacturers' products meaning no additional work has to be carried out on site.

Other benefit-driven additions to the Greenstar i, and Si boilers include an optional vertical pre-piping assembly of pre-fabricated pipework together with an earth bonding strip.

This relieves installers from having to pre-bend pipework behind the boiler should a vertical pipework be necessary.

Martyn ,Bridges director of marketing and technical support at Worcester, said: "The Bosch name is synonymous with quality so for us to have produced products here at Worcester which have been commended as being the highest quality amongst the other Bosch heating and hot water brands throughout the world is an incredible result.".

Bracket guess has Boilers heading West

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For Purdue men's basketball fans, the primary focus is on tonight's game at Michigan.
But anyone who enjoys the college game is watching ESPN's Bracketology, compiled by Joe Lunardi.

Certainly, all of this will change by the time you refresh your computer browser, but Lunardi has six Big Ten teams in the NCAA tournament.

He has Matt Painter and the Boilermakers in Portland, Ore. for first- and second-round action, then staying in the West Regional (Phoenix) if they advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

Lunardi has Purdue as the West's No. 4 seed facing No. 13 seed Nevada in the first round, opposite No. 5 seed Washington and No. 12 seed Maryland.

He has Minnesota as the No. 11 seed in the West.

The South (Memphis) would include 3 seed Michigan State and 9 seed Ohio State. The East (Boston) would have Wisconsin as the 11 seed.

Lunardi seems to like Bruce Weber and Illinois. Bracketology has the Fighting Illini as the Midwest Regional's 7 seed, traveling to Kansas City for first- and second-round action.

If Illinois would reach the Sweet Sixteen, it's off to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Bracketology in no way reflects what the NCAA tournament selection committee will do on March 15. But it's still fun.

Valero boiler malfunctions, bringing release of gases

A boiler shut down at the Valero Refinery near Delaware City this morning, resulting in a huge cloud of smoke and flame that emitted gases into the atmosphere.

The incident occurred about 8:30 a.m. at the plant at 4550 Wrangle Hill Road.

Sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxide and hydrogen sulfide were released to the atmosphere, according to a filing with the state Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.

Valero spokesman Pat Covert said the plant lost one of the boilers in the steam producing unit that runs the refinery process.

That was following by a the shutdown of a second boiler.

The yellowish-green cloud lasted about 45 minutes as the process unit cooled down.

Along with the cloud, a sulfur odor was detected, he said.

“We monitored around the community and we weren’t taking any negative readings in the community,” he said.

Capt. William P. McDaniel II, operations supervisor for air and waste management enforcement in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, said there had been few citizens’ odor complaints.

“They were taking numerous calls about the smoke,” he said.

Covert said that things were stable as of about 1 p.m.

“As soon as we’re able to get the steam production on line we will be starting the boilers,” he said.

According to the U.S. Energy Department, Valero Energy Corp., the largest U.S. refinery, can produce 190,200 barrels of crude oil a day. The refinery mostly handles heavy, high-sulfur, harder-to-process crude oils sold at a discount compared with the lighter crudes handled at Conoco-Philips' Trainer, Pa., refinery and at Sunoco's Marcus Hook, Philadelphia and Eagle Point, N.J., complexes.3

Morrison shoots lights out, thumps Boilers

Kewanee’s Senior Night turned into a red-hot shooting night for the Morrison Mustangs.
The Three Rivers Conference team shot 70 percent from the floor on its way to dismantling the Boilers 93-64 Saturday night at H.F Brockman gym.
Prior to the varsity contest, all seniors participating in winter extra-curricular activities were introduced. When the game started, the show belonged Morrison’s Jason Smith and Travis McBride.
The duo combined for 60 points — Smith 35 and McBride 25 — on 23 of 28 shooting from the floor. As a team, the Mustangs were 37 of 53 on the night, including an efficient 4 of 6 from the 3-point line.
Kewanee Coach Tony Ramos heaped the most praise upon Smith — who went 13 of 15 from the field, 3 of 4 from the 3-point line and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line.
“He’s probably the best player we’ve seen all year,” said Ramos of the Morrison senior. “He can do it all.”
Even with Morrison shooting lights out, the Boilers were within striking distance entering the fourth quarter.
Smith scored eight straight points — highlighted by a reverse layup that resulted in a three-point play and a 3-pointer — for the Mustangs in the opening quarter to lift the visitors to a 15-6 lead.
The Boilers closed the first frame with a bucket from Angel Astorga and three-point play from Albert Fields to trim the deficit to 22-18.
The Mustangs scored the first seven points of the second quarter to stretch the lead to double digits, 29-18, but a nine-point flurry by Terry Mercer and a pair of Brandon LeSage free throws pulled the Boilers within 37-33.
Mercer also scored the final bucket of the half as Morrison led 44-37 at the break.
Smith opened the second half with a three-point play, but Kewanee continued to hang around, cutting the deficit to five points on two occasions. McBride scored Morrison’s final six points of the third quarter to give the visitors a 62-52 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
That’s when Smith and the Mustangs delivered the knockout punch. Morrison scored the first 10 points of the final frame, seven coming from Smith, to stretch its advantage to 72-52. The Mustangs hung 31 fourth-quarter points on the Boilers as Kewanee’s lone highlight in the period came on a 3-pointer from reserve Kyle Lunghofer.
“We scored enough points to beat most high school teams, but we couldn’t stop the barrage of amazing shooting from a pretty good Morrison team,” said Ramos.
Morrison’s high-powered offense consistently beat the Boiler defense in transition for easy buckets and when Kewanee did manage to slow the frenetic pace, the Mustangs simply answered by sticking their perimeter shots.
“It was like which poison do you want to take,” said Ramos.
Eleven Boilers scored on the night, led by Mercer with 17 points and Fields with 13.
The Boilers, now 9-16 overall, have three regular-season games remaining — at Rock Falls Friday, the NCIC Shootout Saturday and the finale at Princeton Feb. 20 — before the postseason arrives.
“I just keep telling these kids we have to keep our heads up and our eyes on the prize,” said Ramos.
The Boilers are the second seed in the five-team Class 2A Rockridge Regional Feb. 23-27. Monmouth-Roseville is the top seed, followed by Kewanee, Sherrard, Rockridge and Knoxville.
“That regional is wide open and we’re definitely one of the contenders,” said Ramos. “We’ll be ready.”

Riveters fall — Morrison also prevailed in Saturday’s fresh-soph opener, topping the Riveters 71-61.
Kewanee led 33-28 at the half, but the Mustangs went on a 24-9 tear in the third quarter to take control. Jordan Hart was the lone Riveter in double figures with 13 points. Morrison’s Nick Volokmann and Dylon Smith led all scorers with 17 points each.

Buckeyes Bounce Boilers in OT

It looked like Ohio State might let a resume builder slip through their fingers after losing a 64-59 lead with 1:53 in regulation but a 14-4 run to start the extra session allowed the Buckeyes to cruise to an 80-72 home victory over #13 Purdue.

Evan Turner was once again the best player on the floor backing up his Big Ten POW honor with a 26 point, 12 rebound, 7 assist effort. To Thad Matta’s credit, he installed Turner at the point for long stretches allowing him to bring the ball up and immediately create off penetration.

The #1 FG% defense in the country couldn’t stop Turner without help and when they rotated the rest of the Buckeyes made them pay. Ohio State shot a blistering 60.4% from the floor (32/53) thanks to stellar ball movement creating wide open shots all night long. How great was the ball movement? Besides Turner’s seven dimes, Jon Diebler picked up seven and P.J. Hill six.

Wil Buford was a prime benefactor as he poured in 22 points, 17 in the second half, on 10/14 shooting.

B.J. Mullens also caught fire hitting 8/9 shots, all dunks or layups, on countless feeds following help side rotations.

It wasn’t all about the offense, however as the Buckeye defense came to play outrebounding the Boilers 34-19. In fact, Purdue didn’t register an offensive rebound until Keaton Grant’s o-board and putback gave the Boilers a 41-40 lead with 15:55 to play.

Purdue would finish with only three offensive caroms on the night while the zone harassed the perimeter shooters into a 6/21 (28%) effort from beyond the arc.

Even with those statistical advantages in hand and Robbie Hummel not playing due to injury, OSU allowed Purdue to force OT after Turner missed the front end of a one and one with 3:17 left, then missed another free throw failing to convert a three point play leaving OSU in front 62-59 with 2:45 left.

Turner would score again on a driving layup extending the lead to 64-59 at the 1:53 mark but Grant answered with a triple cutting the lead to 64-62 with 1:25 remaining.

Still, it appeared OSU was in good shape with possession but Hill inexplicably turned it over on the wing with a lazy pass to a covered Jon Diebler allowing Chris Kramer to tie the game at 64 with a breakaway layup.

Out of timeout, Turner had to force the issue and turned it over but Lewis Jackson’s long jumper with :03 failed to draw iron setting up the extra session.

Ohio State’s confidence wasn’t shaken, however as the quickly jumped on Purdue in overtime taking a 70-66 lead courtesy of a sweet drive and dish from Hill to set up a Dallas Lauderdale dunk followed by two free throws from Turner and a jumper from Diebler.

Following two free throws from JaJuan Johnson, who finished with a career high 30 points, the Buckeyes salted it away with an 8-0 run capped by a Diebler pass off the backboard to B.J. Mullens for the rim-rattler and a 78-68 lead with 20 ticks left. Me likey.

The victory moves Ohio State to 16-5 overall and 6-4 in conference with the Gophers coming to the Schott on Saturday night.

Boilers, Hawkeyes meet looking for consistency

Purdue is on a two-game winning streak but needed a furious late rally to beat Northwestern 63-61 on Thursday.

Despite having one of the Big Ten’s best defenses, Iowa can’t seem to manage enough points to win and has lost two straight.

All both coaches want is some consistency.

The No. 19 Boilermakers need it in the form of toughness and disciplined offense, coach Matt Painter said.

Iowa coach Todd Lickliter would like his team to be more efficient on offense, starting with today’s noon game at Mackey Arena. That may not be an easy task against Purdue, which is second in the NCAA in field goal-percentage defense (36 percent).

The Hawkeyes (11-6, 1-3 Big Ten) have scored at least 60 points only twice in the last six games and failed to reach 50 points three times in that stretch, including back-to-back, 49-point efforts in losses to Minnesota and Michigan.

Lickliter said he’s emphasized defense most of the season in practice – it’s helped his team lead the league in scoring defense (56.1) – but that has come at the expense of offensive productivity.

Though the Hawkeyes lead the league in three-point shooting (40 percent), they’re 10th in scoring offense (62.8).

“We have to address effectiveness and purpose on offense,” Lickliter said.

So do the Boilermakers (13-4, 2-2).

Perhaps it will help that Iowa typically relies on man-to-man defense, not the aggressive trapping zone that Northwestern produced 22 turnovers by Purdue on Thursday. The Boilermakers had trouble with the simple things – passing and catching – against the Wildcats. But they rebounded in the final minutes to pull out at victory on JaJuan Johnson’s two free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining.

“We’re hoping it will help us make some improvements, get us going in the right direction,” Painter said of the victory. “We’ve talked about just getting healthy and playing smart but also playing tough. I thought at the end of the game, we made some tough plays. We made some smart plays. We just have to show more consistency in those areas.”
