Judge prohibits wood boiler in Henrietta Township dispute

A lengthy dispute between Henrietta Township neighbors was resolved this week, resulting in one family not being allowed to use an outdoor wood boiler.

Circuit Court Judge Chad Schmucker ruled that Richard and Julia Cady cannot use the wood boiler, which he believes was a nuisance and health hazard to neighbors.

The Cadys represented themselves in the civil trial in which they were sued by the Jackson County Health Department.

Wood boilers, increasingly popular in rural areas as energy costs rise, transfer heat through water lines from an outside structure to a home for both space and water heating.

The judge also prohibited Cady from incinerating trash, debris and other materials in backyard burn barrels.

Schmucker said the Cadys did not break any laws and that the boiler was properly installed but produces smoke, which can be a nuisance to neighbors.

Richard Soldano, 53, testified he started having headaches in 2003, before Cady built his home, because Cady frequently burned garbage in barrels on his property.

Since then, he's had chest pain and trouble breathing after being outside when the wood boiler is operating.

Soldano's wife has had a chronic cough, and Soldano said he has asthma and a chronic lung condition. Doctors have attributed the conditions to smoke inhalation and warned against the dangers of breathing smoke.

``We are very pleased. It is what we asked the court to do,'' said Bob Grover, the lawyer for the health department. ``I hope it finally resolves problems between neighbors that have been going on for five to six years. I am not optimistic, but hopeful.''

Busy Weekend on the Diamonds for Boilers

Purdue's baseball and softball teams face a busy weekend on the diamonds this weekend as the baseball team plays for its Big Ten Conference fate and the softball teams takes part in the NCAA regional down in Louisville

The baseball team has already gotten a head start, as the final weekend series of the regular season before conference tournaments move back a day to a Thursday-Friday-Saturday format. Purdue needs two wins, two Michigan losses against Northwestern, or one win and one Michigan loss to advance to the Big Ten Tournament next week in Columbus. The Boilers took the first step yesterday with a convincing 12-5 win in the series opener against Illinois.

This was a very impressive win for the Boilers. Phil Haig is the ace of the Illinois staff and Purdue tagged him for 6 runs and 11 hits in five innings of work. Illinois is in the running for an at-large NCAA Tournament berth because of Haig and what he has done on the season. Haig gave up 1 run over seven innings of work earlier this season at #1 LSU as the Illini took two of three from the Tigers when they were the top ranked team in the country. LSU is one of the best home team in collegiate baseball, so a Big Ten team taking two of three from them is virtually unheard of. Dan Black hit his 14th home run of the season for Purdue yesterday and drove in five runs on three hits. Drew Madia also added an eighth inning grand slam to put things away.

Michigan did not cooperate on its end, beating Northwestern 16-6 to stay alive for another day. Purdue had a chance to clinch this afternoon with a 1pm first pitch against the Illini, but Dan Black struck out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to seal a 6-3 loss. Purdue left the bases loaded in each of the last two innings, so they had plenty of chances to make some noise. They now get one more chance to control their fate tomorrow afternoon with a 1pm first pitch at Lambert Field. Michigan and Northwestern just got underway with game two of their series tonight. Rain could play havoc with both game threes tomorrow. If neither game gets played tomorrow, Purdue would still go to the Big Ten Tournament by a half game. So here is what Purdue needs now:

  • A win over Illinois tomorrow OR
  • A loss by Michigan to Northwestern tonight or tomorrow OR
  • Rainouts of both games tomorrow.

UPDATE: Michigan and Northwestern's Friday night game has been rained out and moved to Saturday.

Softball faces Louisville in NCAA Tournament

The women's softball team makes it second NCAA Tournament appearance tonight at Louisville, facing off against the host Cardinals. Purdue gathered some postseason honors along the way this week. Third baseman Liane Horiuchi, and freshman utility player Molly Garst were named second team all-Big Ten while catcher Jenna Alexander and pitcher Suzie Rzegocki were named to the third all-Big Ten team.

Louisville (47-8) finished ranked 19th in the final poll of the season and very nearly was a national seed. They will be the #2 seed in this four team regional, but will host because of geographic balance in the region. They have already set a record for most wins in a season and will be hosting a regional for the first time. It is the second straight year Purdue is the #3 seed in their regional.

Louisville hits the ball very well. Eight players are batting better than .300 on the season and catcher Melissa Roth is batting .437 with 16 home runs and 51 RBI. Third baseman Chelsea Bemis (.389, 8HR, 43 RBI) and outfielder Kristi Cunningham (.307, 12 HR) also pack quite an offensive punch. Purdue will likely be facing Kristen Wadwell in the pitching circle. Wadwell is an ironhorse with a 40-7 record for the Cardinals. She has 237 strikeouts and a 1.37 ERA for the season. Her 40 wins is the best in the country.

Boilers split with Illini

For two hours Wednesday, Purdue's softball team was happily in the top half of the Big Ten Conference standings.

But with one dreadful inning,

After Suzie Rzegocki held an Illinois team with 34 home runs to just a double and a single in a 4-1 victory, the Illini were propelled by a six-run third inning to capture the nightcap 10-6 and leap back ahead of the Boilermakers into fifth place.

"We really needed to sweep this team," said freshman Molly Garst, who was 3-for-7 with three RBIs and three stolen bases in the doubleheader. "We didn't capitalize at the plate, and we really needed the win (in the second game)."

Jenna Alexander drove in two runs, and Garst drove in another during the Boilermakers' Game 1 victory, but the offense was nonexistent in the second contest until it was too late.

Purdue fell behind 6-0 and trailed 10-3 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of home runs.

Rzegocki, who started both games, didn't allow an earned run in 92/3 of work Wednesday, but earned a victory and a defeat after surrendering four unearned runs in the six-run third.

Dana Alcocer relieved Rzegocki in the third inning and gave up consecutive RBI doubles. Alcocer allowed nine hits and four earned runs in 22/3 innings before Ashley DiDomenico entered in the sixth.

Alcocer hit two batters with the bases loaded.

"We could not shut them down in the circle, we got behind batters, we hit batters, we allowed back-to-back doubles, it just wasn't good in the circle for us," Purdue coach Kim Maher said.

Katie Mitchell finally put Purdue on the board, hitting a solo homer over the right field fence to make the score 6-1.

Garst's two-RBI single in the fifth made 7-3, but the Illini countered with three runs in the top of the sixth.

Purdue got a two-run homer from Liane Horiuchi in the bottom of the seventh for the game's final runs.

Maher said that most of the runs came with the pressure off after the Boilermakers gave up a large lead.

Boilers face Big Ten competitor at Metrodome

The Boilermakers will need to take advantage of this weekend’s series to advance in Big Ten standings.
The Purdue baseball team (17-18, 5-6 Big Ten) enters today’s game fifth in the Big Ten standings. The Boilermaker’s weekend opponent, Minnesota (24-12, 7-4), sits just above them.
After defeating Butler 18-4 Wednesday, the team gained confidence going into the Big Ten series. With the Big Ten tightly stacked this season, coach Doug Schreiber believes his team has a chance to beat anyone in the conference.
“Confidence should be a little bit higher,” Schreiber said. “We just have to play well on Friday. It all comes down to who plays better on that given day.”
However, the Boilermakers will have to get past tough pitching from the Golden Gophers, who hold a conference-best 4.64 team ERA.
The series brings an interesting change in atmosphere for the Boilermakers. The teams will be playing in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, something that will force the Boilermakers to change their game a little.
“It’s going to be different playing in a dome,” Schreiber said. “Especially with the type of ceiling that they have. It might be tough for the guys to get used to it, so that will be the biggest difference. I mean, they have the same field turf inside there that we have, so that won’t be too big of a difference. I think seeing fly balls is going to be tough.”
The Metrodome is also used by the Minnesota football team as well as the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and MLB’s Minnesota Twins. Although the players relish the chance to play in such a prestigious venue, they understand the importance of winning.
“It’s going to be nice to play in a major league park, but we have to take it like any other game,” sophomore David Blount said. “We have to play hard and play our game.”
The Boilermakers will face Minnesota at 7:30 p.m. Friday and at 3 p.m. Saturday. The teams will wrap up the series at 2 p.m. Sunday. All games are in Minneapolis, Minn. Friday’s game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.

The future for gas boilers efficiency

How are manufacturers achieving such high levels of efficiency and will it ever be possible to create a gas boiler that's 100% efficient?.

All new and replacement gas-boiler installations (with limited exceptions) must now run at over 86% efficiency.

Some boiler manufacturers are now only building SEDBUK A-rated models, which are over 90%.

With ongoing dedication to improving the efficiency of new boilers, how are manufacturers achieving such high levels of efficiency and will it ever be possible to create a gas boiler that's 100% efficient?.

Martyn Bridges, Worcester's director of marketing and technical support, sheds some light: "Gas domestic heating became popular here in the seventies when North Sea gas became a viable option for the UK to pump.

Until relatively recently, gas boilers were built in cast iron with a simple ignition system, which was often open flue.

In many instances boilers sat in a fire behind a back boiler.

"Many of these back boilers (regular units) had a permanent pilot light, which means that efficiency was compromised quite significantly.

In fact with a permanent pilot light it isn't possible to reach a SEDBUK band D rating (78 -- 82% efficiency).

In the late nineties these permanent pilot lights were eliminated.

"Energy efficiency has been an increasingly important factor in Government environmental policy for a good number of years.

In 1984, the first energy-efficiency rules were introduced within the Building Regulations.

They were extensively tightened in 2002 with the introduction of the SEDBUK (seasonal efficiency of domestic boilers in the UK) rating system within Part L1.

"Further strengthening then occurred in the 2004 updated regulations and precipitated the market's rapid transference to condensing boilers.

In the spring of 2005, all new and replacement gas-fired boiler installations were required to be condensing boilers of at least 86% efficiency (SEDBUK Band A or B).

"Over the years, the development of boiler technology has seen efficiency levels grow massively and now that Part L of the Building Regulations is now firmly in place for gas-fired appliances, manufacturers are keen to prove their boilers are amongst the most efficient.

"A high efficiency condensing boiler works on the principle of recovering as much as possible of the waste heat which is normally rejected to the atmosphere from the flue of a standard efficiency (non-condensing) boiler.

The best high efficiency condensing boilers convert more than 90% of their fuel into heat, compared to 78% for conventional types.

"This is accomplished by using a larger heat exchanger or sometimes two heat exchangers within the boiler which maximize the heat transfer from the burner as well as recovering useful heat which would normally be lost with the flue gases.

When in condensing mode the flue gases give up their 'latent heat' which is then recovered by the heat exchanger within the boiler.

As a result the temperature of the gases exiting the flue of a condensing boiler is typically 50-60degC compared with 120-180degC in a current non-condensing boiler.

At the same time an amount of water or 'condensate' is produced.

"There has been some talk in recent months of the 100% efficiency boiler, however in actual terms this will never be physically possible using current technology.

The highest achievable efficiency for gas-fired boilers is currently 91.6% and I don't see us being able to go much beyond that in the future.

"The real opportunity in terms of increasing efficiency with home heating and hot water provision is to look at secondary efficiency which can be affected by factors such as electricity consumption, standby losses, advanced controls and power save functions.

"At Worcester we are currently appraising a number of options in terms of extra components which will potentially improve these secondary efficiency levels in our Greenstar boilers.

"Other key factors which will also help a boiler run more efficiently include the correct pipework sizing, siting the boiler in the most suitable location and regularly flushing the system, helping to prevent corrosion and make sure it's free from debris.

"Over time your heating system can become rusted from the inside producing iron oxides (black sludge).

This sludge plays havoc with the working parts of a heating system, blocking pipes, radiators, valves, pumps and heat exchangers.

If left to corrode for too long this can significantly reduce the efficiency and even cause premature failure of any of these components.

"The overall carbon savings can be huge if homeowners take a little time out to think about their central heating system operation and installers have a big part to play in encouraging their customers to do this.

They have the direct contact with end-users and this is the best opportunity to convince them they can make a big difference with their actions.

Not just for the environment either; the financial benefits are significant too.

Research from the Energy Saving Trust (EST) claims that potential savings on heating bills can work out around GBP200 a year by replacing an old standard efficiency boiler with an A rated appliance, and combining that with well suited controls.

"Controls can significantly improve the efficiency of the heating system, but selecting the right unit is paramount.

Weather-compensation, for instance, is widely specified in Europe yet infrequently at present in the UK - even though it improves efficiency by reacting to actual weather conditions rather than flow and return water temperatures.

"Controls also have a vital role to play in adjusting a boilers firing rate (input) to meet the heating demand (output) of the system.

By modulating input correctly, less fuel is burned and wasted and emissions are reduced in the process.

"Recent technological advances mean a wide range of intelligent options are now available for installers to choose from in order to meet the exact requirements of each individual household they visit.

Whether specifying basic controls, like mechanical timers, or opting for more advanced controls with room thermostats, such as radio frequency or weather and load compensation systems, it is important to specify the most compatible product in order to ensure best performance from a high-efficiency boiler.

"Combining a high efficiency condensing boiler with our Greenskies solar water heating package will also improve a home's efficiency with 50 -- 70% of a home's hot water provision being provided for free by the sun.

Not only will this represent a further cost saving on bills, it will further reduce the CO2 emissions from the household as the majority of the time you turn on the hot water during the year the boiler will not need to burn any fuel, the heat will be provided by the solar panels.

"According to the EST if everyone in the UK with gas central heating installed a high efficiency condensing boiler, we would save enough energy to heat 3.7 million homes for a year.

So we don't need 100% efficiency boilers, we just need more people to re-think their current heating system.".

Power gear cos may get separate orders for boilers & turbines

NEW DELHI: The government plans to tweak the tendering process for very large power equipment to allow companies to bid separately for boilers
and turbines, a power ministry official said.
The move to withdraw the earlier policy of seeking turnkey contracts, where the winning bidder hands over the completed project, for the proposed supercritical power plants will enable larger participation from global equipment manufacturers, the official said on condition of anonymity.

Supercritical power plants are very large with a minimum capacity of 660 mw for every unit and are more efficient.

Public sector NTPC and Damodar Valley Corp (DVC) will soon come out with tenders inviting bids for 11 units of 660 mw power equipment for five of their upcoming projects.

A turnkey contract criteria limits the race to select few like BHEL and Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the official said. "Our aim is to invite a larger participation and enhance competition so that the country is able to absorb the best technology," he said.

So far, five companies - BHEL, L&T-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) combine, Alstom-Bharat Forge, Toshiba-JSW and Italian company Ansaldo Caldie - have expressed interest in participating in the bulk tendering for supercritical equipment.

While L&T and BHEL will participate in entire plant package, Alstom and Toshiba want to bid only for turbine-generator package, and Ansaldo only for boilers. "The changes in the tendering process have been approved by a high-level committee on infrastructure on power sector issues," the official said.

The committee has representation from the prime minister's office (PMO), finance ministry, power ministry, heavy industries ministry and Planning Commission, among others.

It has been decided that the tender for boiler package will be split between two bidders and that for the turbine-generator package between three bidders. While the lowest bidder (R1) in the boiler package will get three projects, the second-lowest bidder (R2) will get two projects after matching price quoted by R1. The number of units for each bidder would be either seven and four, or six and five. The turbine-generator package is proposed to be split amongst three bidders, with the last bidder getting only one project.

Public sector BHEL will be given preference in the tendering process and would be necessarily ranked R2, if it is not R1 and R2 already. This would ensure that BHEL does not lose out in the tendering process to get projects for its supercritical foray.

An inter-ministerial group is finalising the details, the official said. The power companies will start the tendering process after that, he added.

The move will also lead to winning bidders setting up manufacturing for large equipment facilities. At present, only BHEL has large-scale power equipment manufacturing capability in the country while L&T is expected to start manufacturing of main power equipment soon. Having more equipment manufacturing companies in the country will ensure the shortage of equipment does not derail capacity-addition programmes, the official said.
